![]() In our next Staff Focus from Orkney Housing Association Ltd., we hear from Fraser Devine, Manager for Orkney Care and Repair. When he left school, Fraser initially wanted to work in hospitality so studied for a BA in Hospitality, Business Management and Tourism at Napier University. After University, he took on a temporary role in a music store, which became permanent and eventually saw him promoted to Team Leader then Assistant Manager. A move to Woolworths as a Team Leader followed, and he worked for the company for 17 years in stores across Scotland, finishing up as Manager of the Woolworths in Kirkwall for 11 years, until the business went into administration. Fraser then moved into the Third Sector working for VAO for nine years, before becoming Manager at Skaill House. In 2019, he started with Care and Repair in his current role. ![]() As part of our Social Media Takeover, we hear from Catherine Browne from Orkney Housing Association Ltd (OHAL) who tells us about the journey she took to her current role as Finance and Asset Management Advisor. Shortly after leaving school, Catherine started working in an out of school care facility in her native Shetland. She also picked up part-time work in a variety of different roles while she worked towards her degree in Cultural Studies. She then undertook a postgraduate diploma in Archaeology, which included a two-month placement in Iceland. Following graduation, she worked as an Office Administrator with an Insurance Broker before being offered the chance to move to Orkney to work at Santander. Three years later, she moved to OHAL to work in the Finance Department. Orkney Housing Association Ltd. (OHAL) provide good quality affordable homes and services for the benefit of the people and community of Orkney. There are five departments within OHAL, offering a variety of career opportunities and roles to suit different interests and skill sets. These departments include Finance, Development and Properties, Housing and Customer Services, Corporate Governance and Care and Repair. Rebecca is originally from Sweden and decided that she wanted to study Biology. She went to Australia where she completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology and Zoology. She then went onto work as a substitute teacher back in Sweden before moving to Orkney to start her Masters Degree in Marine Resource Management at Heriot-Watt’s Orkney Campus. Once she finished her Masters she worked for Xodus as a Graduate Environment Consultant before moving to Aquatera to take on her current role. You can read more about Rebecca’s job role below.

If your results are not what you expected, don’t panic you still have options – and there are experts on hand to help you navigate the next part of your journey. From 8am on Tuesday 10 August, a dedicated Results Helpline from Skills Development Scotland (SDS) will run with Careers Advisers waiting to answer calls and offer advice, information and support to young people and their parents or carers. The helpline has been open since mid-June providing support in relation to provisional results and what they may mean, however young people and parents can now get information in relation to course vacancies, clearing, advice on apprenticeships, jobs, volunteering and staying on at school. You can call the helpline on 0808 100 8000. It will be open from 8am-8pm on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 August. Thereafter, it will be open on weekdays between 9am-5pm between Thursday 12 and Wednesday 18 August 2021. Scotland's industry leaders and employers have signed an open letter to Scotland's young people to let them know that they support them, recognise their qualifications and congratulate them on their achievements. You can read the letter below: ![]() Next week, pupils across Scotland will receive confirmation of the provisional results they received from their teachers in June. For some, these results will enable them to move on to their preferred destination, while other may have to consider alternative options if their results were not what they expected. Anyone who is having to reconsider their future plans because their results are not as they had hoped may be feeling particularly disappointed at the moment. Following school, Carol studied Woven Tapestry and Printmaking at Edinburgh School of Art, spending 18 months working in Australia as a tapestry weaver after her graduation. When she returned to Scotland, she worked as a freelance artist and tutor. Throughout her career, she has spent time working for a local textile design company, delivered classes and workshops and working as a part-time lecturer at Orkney College UHI. She joined the Pier Arts Centre in 2005 as Education Officer. ![]() In our next Sector Spotlight on Creative Industries, we hear from Isla Holloway who is the Marketing and Customer Service Manager at the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness. Isla has a lifelong desire to go to Art School, which she achieved by attending Edinburgh College of Art to study Tapestry. Following her graduation, she worked as an artist in Edinburgh for a few years, supplementing her income with part-time work. On returning to Orkney, she worked in retail until the role of Marketing and Retail Development Officer came up at the Pier Arts Centre. ![]() In today’s Sector Spotlight on Creative Industries, we hear from Alison Firth who is a Director at Ortak Ltd. Alison left school at 16 and started working with Rolls-Royce as a secretarial trainee. From there, she went to Thurso College where she gained her HND in Business Studies. She continued to work with Rolls-Royce undertaking various roles which helped her develop different skills and undertake additional training. She then gained her degree through the Open University and trained to become a Chartered Accountant. Today we hear from Carrie Paxton, who is a Glass Artist based in St Ola, Kirkwall. Carrie started her career as an apprentice in a design studio, she then undertook a degree and post-graduate qualifications as a mature student after starting her family. She now runs her own studio and produces a range of items as well as undertaking commissions for businesses and individuals. ![]() For our next Sector Spotlight on the Creative Industries, we hear from Erica Drever who is an Enameller at Sheila Fleet’s. After studying at Orkney College UHI, Erica was looking for a job and, as she has always admired Sheila Fleet’s jewellery, she phoned up the workshop and asked if there were any job opportunities. She was invited in for a trial and 10 years later she is still there. ![]() In our next Sector Spotlight on Creative Industries, we hear from Olivia Yorston who is a Master Pattern Maker at Sheila Fleet Jewellery. Olivia Left school at 15 with no formal qualifications and worked as a Florists for four years. Following a tour at Sheila Fleet’s workshop in Tankerness, she was offered a work trial with the business. Olivia started as a Craft Person before being offered the chance to develop further and train to become the Master Pattern Maker. |
