Third year pupils at Stromness Academy have recently enjoyed a week of activities during the school’s annual Careers Week.
A part of the school calendar since 2019, Careers Week was developed to support pupils in S3, who will shortly be making their subject choices for their fourth year, which can influence where they will end up after school. If so, you may be interested in a new online course which has been developed to help people learn more about careers in Social Care. 'Introduction to a Career in Social Care' is a free six week, part-time, online course being offered by Orkney College UHI. You will be fully supported by a tutor and will need to commit up to ten hours a week to the course. It is ideal for anyone aged 16 years and over and, as the course is part-time, you can fit it round your life and existing commitments. Career opportunities in social care are many and varied, with a variety of services meeting the needs of children, young people and adults of all ages who need support. Applications are currently being invited from any young person who is interested in a work experience opportunity in the banking industry. HSBC have opened applications for their work experience programme, which offers a five-day experience to young people in the senior phase at school (S4-S6) or at College. The programme gives young people an insight into a professional environment as well as the banking industry. The programme will be a blend of both a virtual and a physical placement (where available), giving young people an insight into the future way of working. The programme will run virtually for four days, giving students an insight into the different roles and functions across HSBC, as well as improving personal and employability skills. Where a physical placement is possible, the student will spend the day getting hands on experience of what it is like working for HSBC. The programme will run on the weeks commencing: 20 June 2022; 4 July 2022 and 1 August 2022. The closing date for applications is Sunday 20 February 2022. Young adults have the unique opportunity to gain valuable hands-on conservation experience by creating and running a wildlife youth forum to protect and promote Orkney’s wildlife with the world’s largest invasive species eradication project. The wildlife youth forum offers Orkney young folk (ages 16 – 30) the chance to have their say and be actively involved in wildlife conservation in Orkney. Young adults also have an opportunity to acquire valuable insight into a major conservation project, as well as develop their interests in the company of others sharing similar passions. Activities will be determined by the members and could include opportunities to take part in practical conservation, such as wildlife surveying, in collaboration with the Orkney Native Wildlife Project (ONWP) providing valuable experience for anyone keen in a conservation career. There are many different roles available on the wildlife youth forum which suits all abilities. These range from conservation science, field work to public relations and management.
