The 'No Wrong Path' campaign will be returning to our social media feeds this August and we are inviting anyone from around Orkney – and Orcadians living further afield – to take part. In its eighth year, the campaign runs on the day the Scottish exam results are released and aims to educate and inspire young people about their options regardless of the results they have received, by highlighting that many people in interesting jobs didn't necessarily take a straight, obvious or traditional path to get there. In our final Sector Spotlight post on Administration, we speak to Kendall Pyke, Organisational Development & Improvement Adviser at NHS Orkney. We’ve been very grateful to hear so much from NHS Orkney about their admin roles – it really is a huge part of running a hospital smoothly! Keep an eye on our pages this coming Monday to find out what our next sector will be. In the final day of our Sector Spotlight on Administration, we hear from the last of our respondents from NHS Orkney, the first of whom is Ellie Walker, Recruitment Adviser. In the second-last day of our Sector Spotlight on Administration, we hear from one of our own: Caitlin Walls, Administrative Assistant at DYW Orkney. In day 3 of our Sector Spotlight on Administration, we hear from Elise Doull, a Medical Records Officer at NHS Orkney. This is just one more administrative job role of many within the health service, with more to come later in the week. This is just one more job role of many, as a strong administrative team is integral to the day-to-day running of the health service, and we'll be featuring more of them as the week goes on! Beginning our Sector Spotlight on Administration with a bang, we hear from two different people who hold administrative positions with NHS Orkney, the first of whom is Glynis Briggs, a Surgical PA. During Kirkwall Grammar School’s recent Health and Wellbeing week we offered pupils a chance to gain an insight into careers in Orkney’s food and drink industry. The day started with pupils making dough which they left to prove while they headed through to Stromness to visit Argos Bakery where they were treated to a behind the scenes tour. Local school pupils have been given an insight into careers in social care thanks to a partnership initiative between Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Orkney and St Rognvald’s House in Kirkwall. Throughout the past academic year, pupils from Kirkwall Grammar School have been developing and delivering a range of activities to residents of St Rognvald’s House, giving pupils an opportunity to engage with residents and learn more about some of the roles available in social care. An event to help school pupils explore the range of careers available in the agricultural sector was recently held at Orkney Auction Mart, delivered in partnership by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Orkney and the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET). Developed as an early careers input, the Agricultural Careers Event was targeted to all pupils in first year at local secondary and junior high schools. A marketplace event to showcase the variety of apprenticeships available in Orkney was held at Kirkwall Grammar School during Scottish Apprenticeship Week. Scottish Apprenticeship Week is an annual campaign which celebrates apprenticeships and promotes the benefits of work-based learning. This year’s campaign focused on ‘Skills Generation’ and aimed to show the high quality opportunities an apprenticeship can offer. Stromness Academy’s annual Careers Week was held at the start of February, giving pupils an insight into the variety of careers they can undertake when they leave school. A part of the school calendar since 2019, Careers Week was developed to support pupils in S3 ahead of the subject choices period for their fourth year. The purpose of the week is to inspire and inform pupils about the variety of careers available to help them imagine what they could do in the future. Throughout the week, pupils learn about some of the careers available to them in Orkney and hear about the different pathways they can take into their future job. |
